Whether tired of Vista or you just want to see what all the hubbub's about with Windows 7, upgrading to the newly available Windows 7 RC takes some planning. What do you do if you want to dual boot Windows Vista and 7 RC? What service pack do you need if upgrading from Vista to 7 RC? What if you're upgrading from the Windows 7 Beta to RC? When is it best to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of Windows 7 RC?

All will become clear after the jump.

Lifehacker's Guide to Upgrading to Windows 7 RC has all the answers you'll need. You'll want to take some basic precautions, like backing up your important files, and making an image of your current drive is always good advice. The bottom line: Never put all your eggs (files) in one basket. My days at Iomega listening to customers wailing and moaning over the loss of precious business and personal data (on one disk) made me a very cautious backer upper. If I can't afford to lose something, I back it up to three hard drives -- two internal and one external.

But enough about my data paranoia, if you want to try Windows 7 RC, check the Lifehacker guide and you'll be set. More tech news below.
