Which Netbook OS: Windows and Penguins and Deserts, OMy
Netbooks are becoming quite a popular item this (insert gift giving holiday), but when you tell your significant other that you want a netbook they return from shopping exasperated and confused because researching and buying a netbook can be almost as complicated as purchasing a real computer.
Although I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty details of netbook specifications in this blog, I am going to explain the pros and cons of operating systems on a netbook because for the first time in computer history we actually have a choice, kinda.
The three most popular operating system choices in the netbook market include Windows XP, Linux and Windows Vista (sometimes called Mohave, you know like in the commercial).
Windows XP
I really like Windows XP, maybe it's because it is the first operating system I learned how to use or because it's been around for a really long time, but nonetheless if I had to choose a Windows OS, XP would be my choice.
Pros:
No learning curve
Most applications are compatible
Larger hard drives
Cons:
Takes up more hard drive space
Requires more hard drive and RAM for computing
Usually makes netbook more expensive because you are paying for a Windows license
Linux
Many, including myself, like the idea of new and different operating systems, an alternative to Microsoft so to speak, but are a little nervous about taking the plunge. If you are daring enough to go with a netbook with a Linux based system it's possible you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Pros:
Free operating system
Slightly overall better device price because you are not paying for an OS registration
Lots of free software equivalent to your current programs
Requires less hardware (hard drive, RAM) resources
Cons:
Some learning curve
Sometimes requires additional computer knowledge
Current software might not be compatible
Widows Vista
Despite what you've heard and read from computer purists or Mac users Vista is an OK operating system for the average user. Although I use this operating system at home, putting it on a netbook is a little tricky.
Pros:
Most up to date version of Windows on the market
Cons:
Takes up a lot of hard drive space
Requires a lot, a lot of computer resources, like hard drive space, RAM and CPU
Higher device cost to cover cost of Vista OS
Frankly, we wish we could give you a clear cut "buy this" suggestion; but the operating system you choose is ultimately dependant on what your overall needs are. So weigh the pros and cons above and decide what's right for you.
