This ought to be interesting, if nothing else. Buried at the bottom of the Windows 7 home Home Premium user agreements is a little vignette about a family pack. What? Windows 7 is offering a family pack? This sounds like a plausible deal on the much-anticipated Windows OS, but can Microsoft make it worth our time?

The language of the fine print goes into all sorts of details about how the software can only be installed on three computer in the household for use only by people living in the household and yadda yadda. Ok fine we get it. But the Family Pack is for three users. Huh. Apple considers 5 a family pack …. And we’re pretty certain Microsoft’s pricing on the family pack will far outweigh Apple’s.

Current predictions for the price are between $150-$190 for an upgrade pack. Sure it’s less than Apple’s, but, as we said before, Apple has room for two more computers. So per computer Apple is cheaper, but then again how many households will want to put a new OS on five computers? Ok, so it’s difficult to say which competitor is offering the better deal, but we will say that this family pack of Windows 7 won’t come cheap, but will still be a lot cheaper than buying three packages individually.
