Windows 7 in 7 Months?

If Microsoft knows what's good for them they'll release Windows 7 this year, and it sounds like it may (September, actually) be released before the 4th quarter. This schedule sounds about right considering the public beta earlier this year and the expected Release Candidate in April.

The new schedule insight comes from Compal Electronics president Ray Chen. Compal is the Taiwanese company in charge of manufacturing PCs for Acer, HP, and Dell. So yeah, Mr. Chen's late September-early October-ish could be valid.

Microsoft officials are (of course) still standing by the official stance that Windows won't ship until early 2010, joining the ranks of next installments of Windows 7 mobile and Microsoft Office 14. Personally we think Microsoft is just underpromising in hopes to over deliver. We'll hope Compal's early insight works out.

I guess we'll wait and see (read: speculate some more as it gets closer). What does this new autumn release mean? Possible conclusions:

  • Get Windows 7 out before the holidays?

  • Possible synchronization with start of school?

  • Coordination with Green Day?
